An important note I didn't cover: quite a few are thrust into the #2 position and aren't prepared and end up having to respond to the PQ problem, having to be political when they are not engineered to be or aren't aware of the PQ demands placed on that role.
100%- it’s a twist on the expectation companies have that people can naturally take on all the elements of a new leadership role with 0 prep or experience.
I believe the only way to really succeed at the #2 spot is to really buy into the idea that the company’s success is your success.
If you can’t surrender to that you’ll fail for all the reasons you just highlighted.
If you can make the mental leap- I think you end up not just surviving, but winning.
